Next Gen Freelander Spied Testing India

Recently, a test mule of the next generation Land Rover Freelander has been caught testing under heavy camouflage in Kerala, India. The next generation Freelander is most likely to be based on a stretched platform of the Range Rover Evoque. It is said to be joining the Land Rover Discovery family by doing away with the Freelander nameplate. The test mule of the new Freelander is interestingly camouflaged with the Range Rover Evoque styling, featuring similar design elements such as the tail lamps and headlamps.

The next generation Land Rover Freelander will be offered in 5-seater and 7-seater versions in India. Engine options on the upcoming offering is yet to be known clearly but it is most likely to be powered by Jaguar-Land Rover’s new range of 4-cylinder engines, including both diesel and supercharged petrol motors. Land Rover is expected to introduce the next generation Freelander in the Indian market in late 2014. The British automaker is likely to position the new Freelander between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.

The current generation Freelander has been recently refreshed with cosmetic and equipment upgrades but the British automaker is considering a makeover for the SUV. Land Rover will introduce the next generation Freelander featuring significant changes by getting rid of the old platform. The manufacturer announced recently that they will only use two platforms for their upcoming products – Evoque platform and the all-alluminium Land Rover D7 platform. This will help them to optimise resources. The new Freelander will compete with the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.
