Yamaha was the first bike manufacturer to get superbikes in India with the YZF-R1 and the MT-01 last year. Suzuki, Ducati and Honda followed with their big bikes. The superbike segment which was lackluster before has started to heat up.  This segment has very few buyers and bike manufacturers will leave no stone unturned to win the hearts of superbikers. To get the best out of this opportunity Yamaha India plans to launch the FZ1 in India in 2009.

Yamaha India has sent the FZ1 for homologation.Yamaha is considering the Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) route for the FZ1. This will help Yamaha to price the FZ1 competitively. Infact Yamaha can price it cheaper than the cheapest superbike available today, the Honda CB1000R which is the cheapest imported superbike currently sold.

The FZ1 is powered by a 998cc liquid-cooled engine producing a maximum power of 150PS at 11000rpm. Its R1-based engine packs a mighty midrange punch and that cast aluminium frame cuts its way through the curves like a supersport bike. The bike will either sport a quarter fairing or will be a completely naked one. The 2009 Yamaha FZ1 comes with ABS as standard. Picture gallery of the FZ1 to follow.
