Overall silhouette remains similar to the unofficial sketch

The Creta-rivalling SUV from Toyota, D22, has been spotted again, this time with minor design updates

The upcoming strong-hybrid premium compact-SUV from Toyota, which has been codenamed D22, has been spotted testing on our roads again revealing some crucial details. The SUV features minor design updates this time over the unofficial sketch released a few days ago.

This project is a joint effort of Maruti Suzuki and Toyota wherein the partners will make 2 premium compact SUVs 1 for each with segment-best features and strong-hybrid powerplant to take the fight against Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

The both cars will be manufactured by Toyota with majority of the component suppliers from Maruti Suzuki’s stable.

The SUV is built on Toyota’s low-cost DNGA platform

While Toyota’s model has been codenamed D22, Maruti Suzuki calls its version YFG. The spotted car this time, however, is the D22.

The unofficial production-ready sketches of both the cars got leaked online a few days back. Comparing that with this spotted car reveals some styling revisions.

The front grille now looks larger in size taking the shape of a trapezoid but with curved edges. Unlike the design sketch, the number plate housing is on the grille instead of the bumper.

The alloy wheels look rather boring though

A slit on the bumper can be seen at the top although nothing much about that could be made out. The LED drls have also become smaller when compared to the design sketch.

The biggest revelation, however, are the alloy wheels. So far, no test mule of the D22 sported alloy wheels. Though there are some detailing on the wheels, they still look boring and not as good as that of those seen on the unofficial sketch.

With the commencement of trial production of both the cars, their unveil might happen one after another by around June or July with launch happening thereafter.

The rear gets a shark-fin antenna

The SUVs are built on Toyota’s low-cost DNGA platform that does duty on many Toyota and Daihatsu cars abroad. The SUVs will be completely localised for keeping costs in check.

They are expected to be powered by 2 petrol engines, each with a hybrid drive unit. While the first might get a mild hybrid, the second will be a stronger system, delivering higher power and better mileage.
