Tata will expand Harrier EV AWD availability to lower, more affordable trims

Tata Motors is preparing to extend its all-wheel-drive technology to lower trims of the Harrier EV, making the AWD-equipped version more accessible to buyers. At present, Tata’s Quad Wheel Drive system – branded as QWD – is available only on the top Empowered variant of the electric SUV.

The decision follows higher-than-expected demand for the AWD option. Tata had initially projected that the QWD configuration would account for around 20 percent of Harrier EV sales. However, current figures show that the AWD variant contributes nearly 30 percent of total purchases, prompting the company to expand its availability across the lineup. The move is also expected to pave the way for wider adoption of the QWD badge as Tata prepares additional AWD-capable SUVs, including the upcoming Sierra EV.

The Harrier EV AWD setup features dual motors – an induction motor at the front and a permanent magnet synchronous motor at the rear—producing a combined output of 313 HP and 540 Nm of torque. The AWD variant is offered with a 75kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed range of 622 km. Along with enhanced traction, the configuration positions the Harrier EV among the most powerful models in Tata’s electric portfolio.

Currently priced at Rs. 28.99 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the Empowered 75 QWD trim, the all-wheel-drive system is expected to become available on mid-level variants such as the Fearless trim. It remains uncertain whether the AWD setup will be paired with both the 65kWh and 75kWh battery packs once introduced.

The expansion of AWD availability signals Tata Motors’ confidence in growing consumer interest for premium EV configurations and suggests a more diverse product strategy as the brand builds toward future models like the Sierra EV.
