Moving towards its goal to achieve an annual sales of 2 million units, Maruti Suzuki has laid the foundation stone for its upcoming vehicle manufacturing facility in Gujarat. The Suzuki Group will set up three plants in Hansalpur near Ahmedabad with a total annual capacity of 7,50,000 units per year. Spread over 640 acres, the campus will also incorporate a supplier’s park.

The first plant for which the foundation stone has been laid is set to be operational by mid-2017, attracting an investment of Rs. 3000/- crores and will be producing 2,50,000 units per year. The initial capacity however will be limited to 1,50,000 units per year. These vehicles will be exclusively supplied to Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL).

Suzuki states that the upcoming state-of-the-art facility will come with high focus on productivity and efficiency. The new plant is extremely vital for the automaker and help amplify its production capabilities to address the demand for domestic and global markets. The first plant is expected to manufacture the company’s small light commercial vehicle (Super Carry) as well as the upcoming 7-seater Wagon R that will rival the Datsun GO+ in the segment.

The plant which is being set-up by Suzuki Japan will help Maruti Suzuki save on capital expenditure which will be used in developing new products and marketing. The Gujarat plant will be owned by Suzuki with Maruti being the sole customer for the purchase of cars from the Japanese firm.
