Maruti Suzuki has placed its bets on SUVs and has begun work on its long-term blueprint to increase its offerings in the said segment. It is a part of the company’s strategy to safeguard its position in the Indian car market.

Maruti Suzuki plans to introduce new products and redesign some of its hatchbacks on the lines of an SUV like the Ignis hatchback.

The change in market tactics comes as utility vehicles have been showing robust sales growth in an otherwise subdued market. Within a time span of 3-4 years, Maruti plans to offer several different products in the segment at different price points.

Maruti Suzuki plans to bring the Jimny compact SUV to India which will be placed below the popular Vitara Brezza. The company has even started preparations to bring the vehicle to India. It is also likely to bring back the Grand Vitara to rival the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos. This model is likely to be manufactured in Toyota’s second plant in Bengaluru.

Under its alliance with Toyota, the company is also developing a ‘C’ segment SUV.
