Maruti’s 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine, the one that’s sourced from Fiat will be soon phased out due to it not being able to meet BS6 emission norms that will kick in from 2020.

Every diesel car in Maruti’s portfolio is powered by this 1.3-litre diesel engine except for the S-Cross that in addition to the 1.3-litre diesel is also powered by a bigger 1.6-litre diesel engine, again sourced from Fiat. The 1.3-litre diesel engine comes in two states of tunes, for instance on the Baleno, Swift and the Dzire it makes 74 HP and 190 Nm of torque, while on the Ciaz and Vitara Brezza it makes a higher 89 HP and 200 Nm of torque.

Maruti is said to be working on a new 1.5-litre diesel engine that will be plonked in the Ciaz. However, it remains to be seen what diesel engines will the Ignis, Swift, Baleno, Dzire and Vitara Brezza get after the phasing out of the 1.3-litre diesel engine. The Celerio, however, is powered by 793cc diesel engine that produces 47 HP and 125 Nm of torque, this oil burner has been discontinued but is being used in the Carry LCV.

Talking of power and torque figures, the new 1.5-litre diesel engine’s details haven’t been revealed yet. This powerplant is being developed by Suzuki in-house and will also meet BS6 emission norms.

The introduction of the new 1.5-litre diesel engine and phasing out of the 1.3-litre diesel will help Maruti’s profitability to improve, as it will be saving on the huge royalties that it pays to Fiat Powertrain Technologies.
