First Bajaj Triumph Bike Launch Not Before 2020
The first Bajaj Triumph bike will take at least 2-3 years to be developed and hit the roads.
Bajaj and Triumph recently announced their global partnership to develop a range of mid-capacity bikes in the 400-800cc segment. It took a little over 6 months for both Bajaj and Triumph to announce this partnership.
The launch of the first bike from this partnership will not be happening before 2020. This partnership will allow Triumph to address a segment it currently does not operate in using Bajaj’s strengths as a low-cost and high margin manufacturer. The motorcycles coming out of this partnership will see design and engineering inputs from Triumph while Bajaj will be doing the sourcing of raw materials and manufacturing of the bikes. The bikes will be manufactured at Bajaj’s Chakan facility (Bajaj is also looking to set-up a new facility in Chakan for which it has already acquired land) and thereafter will be badged as Triumph and sold in India and globally.
Initially, there will be a focus on the domestic market (ie.. India) while the phase 2 will see concentration towards export markets. The bikes from this partnership will be sold globally and will take on the products from the TVS-BMW JV, Mahindra-BSA-Jawa partnership and not to forget Royal Enfield too.
Triumph will be filling the gap in Bajaj’s portfolio with its cruiser or lazy-style riding or easy-style riding bikes that were missing. While Bajaj will cater to the commuter segment, KTM will cater to the performance segment. Bajaj has not decided on any numbers with regards to this partnership but it is expecting extremely significant volumes. The Pulsar maker does feel it will be able to replicate the success of KTM with Triumph and if it does that, the Bullet maker better take notice.
