2013 Mahindra Scorpio Special Edition Launched
As compact SUVs come to challenge the Mahindra Scorpio, the automaker has taken notice and is working on a facelift. The next generation Scorpio won’t hit our shores before 2016 while the facelift will be launched next year. To keep the 10+ year old Scorpio going, Mahindra has launched the Scorpio Special Edition, which is very similar to the one which was sold in 2010 by the company. So there is not much new and the limited edition model aims at luring buyers to Mahindra showrooms, even though the vehicle is itself quite dated now. This special edition of the Mahindra Scorpio is priced at Rs. 11.88 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The Mahindra Scorpio Special Edition gets european leather interiors in tan and beige, leather wrapping on steering wheel (even the gear knob and gear shift get it), alloy wheels with chrome finish, roof mounted DVD player with 9-inch screen, gloss wood finished central bezel and dual airbags. Now these features don’t add much value to the Mahindra Scorpio because most of these features can be added by owners from aftermarket shops. The additional features also do little to boost the appeal of the Scorpio, which hasn’t got any significant update in a long long time.
The Mahindra Scorpio Special Edition is offered in VLX trim and is limited to 500 units (the old special edition was limited to 1000 units). The vehicle is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine which belts out 120 BHP of power at 4000 RPM and 290 Nm of torque between 1800-2800 RPM. The Mahindra Scorpio was the best selling SUV in India but the Renault Duster overtook it earlier this year. However the Scorpio managed to overtake the Duster but the highest selling SUV in the past two months is the Ford EcoSport. The Special Edition won’t really bump the sales of the Scorpio as the price is more than the top-end EcoSport.
