2012 Yamaha Prototype Scooter

With five thousand down-payment bookings already in its pockets, Yamaha is betting big on its upcoming offering, the Ray scooter. Positioned as a competitor to the Honda Activa, Suzuki Access, Hero Maestro, Mahindra Duro, etc, the Yamaha Ray has been targeted towards everyone between the age of 16 to 60 years. It is expected to be priced at Rs. 51,000/- (Pune). The company is expecting a conservative demand of around 20,000 units per month. The first scooter would be launched in September in Hyderabad.

Much of the demand for scooters has been seen from states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. The scooter segment in India, which is a mass-segment, accounts of one-fifth of the two-wheeler market. This is a significant space and grabbing a share here can get the companies volume. It is a potential market which has been growing steadily with 25 percent growth seen over the last year. All mass market motorcycle manufacturers except Bajaj Auto offer scooters.

TYamaha Ray will be produced at the company’s manufacturing facility at Surajpur in Uttar Pradesh. The company had already invested Rs. 750 crores to expand its installed capacity. The capacity has now being increased to 6,00,000 units per annum. The Yamaha Ray which will be powered by a 113cc, single-cylinder engine, will produce 8 BHP of power. It will be offer a mileage of around 45 km/l. Yamaha plans to export the Ray to other markets in the future.
