Hyundai Motor India Faces Rs. 22 Crore Customs Duty Demand

Hyundai Motor India has received a customs duty demand exceeding Rs. 22 crores, according to a regulatory filing submitted to the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The order, issued by the Office of the Commissioner of Customs Chennai II Imports, was received by the company on April 21, 2026.

The demand relates to the classification of imported air purifiers. Authorities have alleged that Hyundai applied an incorrect classification that enabled it to pay a lower concessional customs duty rate of 7.5 percent. As a result, the company is said to have paid less duty than applicable.

The order includes a differential duty demand of approximately Rs. 7.27 crore, along with an equivalent penalty of Rs. 7.27 crore. In addition, a redemption fine of about Rs. 7.47 crore has been imposed, while the interest component is yet to be specified.

Hyundai Motor India has stated that it is currently examining the order and considering its legal options, including the possibility of filing an appeal. The company also clarified that the development has not had any impact on its financial position, operations or business activities.
