Volkswagen Golf R Next-Gen To Be Powered By Audi RS3’s 5-Cylinder Engine, Expected To Launch In 2027
Volkswagen is preparing the next Golf R, expected to be the most powerful Golf ever. It will also mark the brand’s shift to its last purely petrol-powered Golf when it launches in 2027. This marks a significant milestone before Volkswagen’s electrification shift.
Design Changes
The design updates will reflect the performance boost. Test mules reveal bonnet intakes, a bigger roof-mounted spoiler, and a more aggressive diffuser. Quad exhausts with titanium tips and active flaps are also likely additions.
Engine & Transmission
The addition of Audi’s 2.5-litre five-cylinder petrol engine from the RS3 represents the biggest change. The current Golf R makes 328 HP and 400 Nm of torque from a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. The new engine produces 394 HP and 480 Nm of torque, with 0-100 km/hr times approaching 3.8 seconds.
Mechanical Changes
Volkswagen may further improve performance as it explores the engine’s potential. The Audi RS3 Performance Edition has already pushed the motor to 401 HP and 500 Nm of torque. This suggests that the Golf R could become the quickest version ever built.
The stronger engine will be supported by mechanical changes. Necessary suspension tweaks will manage added weight, while larger brakes will improve stopping performance. A reconfigured seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with revised ratios and launch control is also expected.
Outlook
Volkswagen plans to unveil the new Golf R next year. Volkswagen R’s 25th anniversary in 2027 will align with sales. The Golf R, with its iconic five-cylinder, may serve as a fitting farewell to petrol power.
