Tata to launch Safari and Harrier petrol variants with 1.5-litre turbo in November

Tata Motors is preparing to expand its popular SUV portfolio with the launch of petrol-powered variants of the Safari and Harrier. The new 1.5-litre GDI four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, producing 168 PS and 280 Nm of torque, is set to debut in November 2025, timed to coincide with the festive season demand.

The addition of this petrol engine marks a significant shift for both SUVs, which until now have been offered only with the 2.0-litre turbo diesel sourced from FCA. The new petrol motor is expected to be paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. By introducing this option, Tata Motors aims to broaden the appeal of its midsize SUV lineup while potentially lowering entry prices.

The same engine is also expected to power the upcoming Tata Sierra, which is planned in both ICE and electric versions. The Sierra will reportedly debut as an EV in early 2026, with the petrol variant following later.

Tata has also secured rights from FCA to make upgrades to the 2.0-litre diesel engine without requiring external approvals. This gives the company more flexibility in refining the motor to improve efficiency and manage costs, while production of the diesel unit will continue at the Ranjangaon facility.

The introduction of the new petrol powertrain reflects Tata’s effort to remain competitive in the midsize SUV market, where rivals increasingly offer petrol, hybrid and CNG alternatives.
