Over 6.7 lakh cars have been transported by rail

Maruti Suzuki Car Transport by rail has, in the past six years, offset circa 3000 MT CO2 emissions, the automaker has revealed.

Over 6.7 lakh Maruti Suzuki cars have been transported through the Indian Railways between 2014 and 2020. The first dispatch using double decker flexi-deck rakes took place in March 2014.

In all, more than 100 million (10 crore) litres of fuel was saved, as the company avoided over one lakh truck trips on Indian national highways.

By reducing road transport, Maruti Suzuki claims it has mitigated risks associated with it as well.

In FY 2019-20, over 1.78 lakh cars were dispatched by rail, a 15 percent increase over the previous year. This accounts for nearly 12 percent of total sales of the company in the period.

The operations started with the use of single deck Indian Railway wagons named the New Modified Goods (NMG), which could carry 125 cars.

New wagons were developed to accommodate more cars over the years. The latest BCACBM wagons have the capacity to carry 318 cars with a 95 km/hr speed limit.

Maruti Suzuki is the first auto manufacturer in the country to obtain Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) license and till date 27 such high capacity rakes have been inducted.

At present, Maruti Suzuki utilises five loading terminals at Gurgaon, Farukhnagar, Kathuwas, Patli and Detroj.

It also makes use of 13 destination terminals across the country, even reaching Agartala in the North East.

It is claimed that Maruti Suzuki car transport by rail has helped reduce transportation time by nearly half, when compared to road transportation.
