The Volkswagen ‘DieselGate’ scandal which came out in the open just a matter of days back stole the company of its massive reputation that it had earned over the past many decades. While Volkswagen claimed that a total of 11 million cars from its entire group were affected in the scam, Audi has come out clean and has stated that out of those, approximately 21 lakh Audi vehicles have been affected, across various countries.

The Volkswagen Group consists of Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, Skoda and Ducati. The 2.1 million Audi cars that have been affected include models like the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, TT, Q3 and Q5. Out of all these, how many are affected in India is still unknown. 1.42 million cars with EU5 engines are affected in Western Europe, 5.77 lakhs in Germany and 13,000 in USA. It remains to be seen how efficient is the company in identifying the affected vehicles in India too and rectifying the emissions issue at the earliest.

While this whole scam has affected Volkswagen’s reputation by a very large way, it will be interesting to see how the automaker tackles the whole episode and comes out of it. Sure, Volkswagen will pay the fine, but what after that? How will the brand instil trust back into its stakeholders, customers, company staff and a lot more people? Volkswagen has already launched an internal probe to find out how many Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi cars have been affected in the country.

The government has also asked ARAI to inquire about the details and the institution will submit a report by the end of this month. The company, however has not stopped production of these vehicles and all models are being manufactured and sold. Upon finding out what models are affected, the company will notify existing owners of the cars and let them know the future course of action.
