2014 Yamaha SR400

Yamaha had discontinued the production of its much famed sports heritage model, SR400 since the bike made its original debut 35 years ago. Yamaha is all set to bring back the iconic bike which is set to offer today’s riders the opportunity to experience the sheer joy and pleasure of riding associated with simpler and more traditional designs. Yamaha has decided not to play mix of styles because the hardware simply looks great in its old school form. EICMA saw the viable return of the pre-eminent classic, priced at €5990 (Rs. 5.03 lakhs).

The Yamaha SR400 bears a 400cc single-cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled SOHC, 2-valve engine which is technically identical to the original specifications barring a few minor inevitable changes. The SR400 produces a maximum power output of 23 BHP at 6500 RPM and peak torque of 27.4 Nm at 3000 RPM. The engine thump at low revs gives this timeless classic a feel of engaging character and enduring appeal. Yamaha has provided all the necessary subtleties including chrome fenders, 18-inch aluminium spoked wheels, frame for bed, lots of chrome, projecting lights, slim snazzy fuel tank with a capacity of 12 litres and a low exhaust. The bike weighs 174 kgs (wet).

Telescopic forks upfront ensure a 150 mm travel range while the twin suspension at the rear allows the wheel movement by a measure of 111 mm. The kick starter is the only means of getting the engine running. The usage of new electronic fuel injection technology on the Yamaha SR400 allows the bike to be in compliance with regulations on emissions which contributes for reduced consumption. The SR400 rides on Metzeler Perfects which has a lot of curvature to fit the narrow rims on older and classic bikes. The bike will be available at dealerships in early 2014 and it definitely is a treat for the SR series loyalists celebrating the 35th anniversary of this heritage machine.
